Genealogy

Levin Powell (1737-1810) had been on George Washington’s staff during the Revolutionary war. He was the founder of Middleburg, Virginia, a village 45 miles west of Washington, the nation’s capital. Levin Powell married Sarah Harrison (1746-1812).

Their son, Burr Powell (1768-1839) married Catherine Brooks (1770-1851). A daughter of Burr and Catherine Brooks Powell was Ann Whiting Powell (1793-1823). Ann married Lloyd Noland (1791-1871). Catherine Mary Powell Noland (1814-1895) author of the diary and memoir, was one of Lloyd and Catherine’s children.

Catherine Mary Powell Noland married William Bailey Cochran (1810-1898) and the couple had three children: Fanny Berkeley Cochran (1839-1865) who married Thomas Dudley and was the mother of four daughters. Catherine and William Cochran’s son, John Henry Cochran (1843-1906), fought in the Civil War in an artillery unit. Daughter, Caroline Cohran (1843-1919), remained unmarried.
